“Something Old, Something New: How Modern Day Style Mavens Wear Vintage” featuring the “homeless to Harvard” style of artist, photographer and actor Liam Alexander.
Something Old, Something New: Liam Alexander
I met Liam at a holiday party this past winter where he snapped this awesome photo of me and my friend Bahar Shahpar. I noticed Liam’s bracelets, as I’ve seen other guys wear similar ones, and wondered what they were all about. Well, now I know.
Overall, I couldn’t have anticipated a cooler story behind this outfit. From a favorite vintage find in Middle America to feathers from a gypsy woman on the street, here’s Liam:
I am an artist, photographer, and actor; I just finished a 5 month run of a play in the West Village, and now I’m just at home retouching, scanning, painting and doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff. I’ve got 3 fashion editorials coming out, and I’m putting together 2 shows of my work, so I’m in montage phase right now. You can check out my website for updates on all that cool stuff in the coming month.
This outfit reflects my “Homeless to Harvard” style. It’s a combination of me wearing whatever makes me happy when I wake up in the morning combined with whatever I slept in/have been wearing for the last 10 years.
I dress how I feel. Some days it’s a pirate, or maybe a businessman, today it was kind of a chicapae poet Indian traveler. I don’t have to go to a job, so I have no social requirements on how I dress—I get to wear whatever I want all the time!(Chicapae is a way of life; it’s a dream, it’s a reality. Chicapae is the laughter of children and the songs of the wind; it is the embodiment of the young, hot, and free spirits of the world.)
Here I was just going to the grocery store. There are a lot of situations that you can be under dressed for but the grocery store is a place where you can be overdressed and, looking back, I definitely was.
All of the things I wear have sentimental value, it’s a collection of stuff I have acquired over many years, most are gifts, or vintage purchases. It all has meaning and I personalize a lot of it.
The hat is a Fashion Against AIDS hat that I put a cool feather in. I don’t know where the hat came from, but I’m so happy that it did! The feather was around $4 from a gypsy woman on the street in Brooklyn, NY.My bracelets were all gifts from people who are special to me with the exception of the cloth one, which is just a shirt collar I cut off about 3 months ago and it has stayed there since. I have one picture where I am actually wearing an argyle sock on my arm.
I basically only purchase vintage stuff; it’s cheap, made better than new stuff, and I end up cutting up all my clothes, or spilling salsa on them anyway so it’s kind of ridiculous to spend a lot of money on them.
Here I am wearing a vintage vest that I purchased at Viceversa on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg—I doubt I spent more than $10 on it. I made the necklace from another necklace I found on the ground, and some feathers that fell off a hawk in Chile. The shirt is vintage from my life, it was probably new when I bought it but it definitely vintage now.
The pants are the only thing that is new, they were given to me by a designer, Timo Weiland, who makes cool clothes. The shoes are my absolute best find ever! They’re vintage, $2 shoes, that I found in Arkansas on a road trip across America.
Vintage shopping is great in Middle America and on the Upper East Side of New York City; because no one has any style there, everything cool is like $2.

This post is part of an ongoing series, “Something Old, Something New,” that looks at how people with amazing personal style incorporate vintage and heirloom pieces into their everyday wardrobes. Through a series of personal anecdotes and images, I’ll show how when it comes to dressing there’s more than meets the eye and share the story — behind the outfit — with you here.
